WHAT I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DEXA…

WHAT TO EXPECT?

A DEXA scan on a GE Lunar scanner is a quick, simple, and comfortable test used to measure your bone density. When you arrive, you’ll lie on a padded table while the scanner’s arm gently moves above you — it doesn’t touch you, and nothing is enclosed, so it feels open and easy. You’ll just need to stay still for a few minutes as the machine takes low-dose X-ray images of your spine, hips, or other areas your doctor requests. The scan is painless, quiet, and usually finished in about 30 minutes. You can breathe normally, relax, and keep your clothes on as long as they don’t have metal. After the scan, you can return to your normal activities right away.

CAN I HAVE A BMI WITHOUT A BONE DENSITY?

Yes, at Blue Star Imaging  | At The Star we ar able to perform BMI (Body Mass Index).  This is an elective procedure and is not filed with insurance.  The cost for a BMI is $249.  A detailed report will be provided to your physician.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

For a DEXA scan, patients should wear comfortable clothing without any metal. This means avoiding zippers, buttons, snaps, belts, or underwire bras. Soft, loose-fitting items like sweatpants, leggings, T-shirts, or athletic wear work best. If your clothing contains metal, you may be asked to change into scrubs to ensure clear, accurate results.

What are the benefits of a bone density?

A bone density test offers several important benefits for your long-term health. It helps identify osteoporosis or low bone strength early, often before a fracture happens, so treatment can start sooner. The test also shows your risk of future fractures, helping your doctor create a personalized plan to protect your bones. It’s a quick, painless, low-radiation scan that provides clear information about how your bones are aging. By tracking bone density over time, it also helps measure how well medications or lifestyle changes are working. Overall, a bone density test is one of the best tools for preventing fractures and maintaining strong, healthy bones as you age.
