WHAT I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MY ULTRASOUND…
IS THERE ANY PREPARATION FOR MY ULTRASOUND?
Preparation may vary. Some exams require a full bladder or fasting, while others need no prep at all. Your provider will tell you exactly what to do.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING MY ULTRASOUND?
Gel will be applied to your skin. A warm, water-based gel helps the sound waves travel and allows the technologist to get clear images.
You may feel slight pressure. The technologist moves a small handheld device (the transducer) over the area being scanned. It shouldn’t hurt, but you may feel mild pressure.
You might need to remove clothing or wear a gown. This depends on the area being examined, but privacy is always respected.
IS ULTRASOUND SAFE?
It’s safe and painless. Ultrasound uses sound waves — not radiation — so it’s considered very safe for adults, children, and pregnancy.
HOW LONG DOES AN ULTRASOUND TAKE?
It usually takes 20–45 minutes. Most exams are quick, and you can return to normal activities right after.
CAN THE TECHNOLOGIST TELL ME MY RESULTS?
No. Results are read by a radiologist. The technologist performs the scan, but a radiologist reviews the images and sends your doctor a report.
