WHAT I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MY MRI…
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
To ensure your MRI is safe, comfortable, and accurate, please follow these clothing guidelines:
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes – Soft cotton garments without metal (zippers, snaps, buttons, underwire) are best. We will provide scrub tops and bottoms if you are unable to wear these items.
Avoid clothing with metal – No metallic threads, zippers, buttons, hooks, or rhinestones. These can interfere with the scan or pose a safety risk.
Leave jewelry and accessories at home – Remove all earrings, necklaces, watches, piercings, hairpins, and other metal items before your appointment. We do provide lockers for any valuables.
Avoid wearing underwire bras – Opt for a sports bra or wireless alternative.
You may be asked to change into scrubs – If your clothing isn’t MRI-safe, we’ll provide scrubs and secure locker for your belongings.
Wear minimal layers – MRI rooms can be cool, but you may be offered a blanket if needed.
WHAT ARE REASONS I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO HAVE AN MRI?
Metal Implants or Devices
-
Pacemakers or implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) (unless MRI-safe)
-
Cochlear implants (hearing devices)
-
Neurostimulators
-
Aneurysm clips or surgical coils (especially older models)
-
Joint replacements, screws, rods, or plates (depends on material and location)
-
Metal fragments or shrapnel in the body, especially near vital organs or eyes
-
Dental implants or braces (may affect head/neck scans)
HOW LONG DOES AN MRI TAKE?
The length of an MRI scan typically depends on the part of the body being examined and the specific details required by the doctor, but most MRI procedures take between 20 to 90 minutes. A simple scan, like one of the brain or knee, may take around 30 to 45 minutes, while more detailed or multiple area scans can last longer. The process involves lying still in a narrow tube while a magnetic field and radio waves create detailed images of the body’s internal structures. In some cases, a contrast agent may be injected to enhance image clarity, which can add time to the procedure. New technology added to our scanners have decreased the scan time, however, we work hand in hand with many different surgeons that request added sequences for added detail. This may increase the amount of time on the scanner.
WHAT IF I AM CLAUSTROPHOBIC?
For patients who are claustrophobic and need an MRI, we take several steps to help ensure a more comfortable experience. One of the most effective options we offer is our wide bore MRI machine, which has a larger opening than traditional scanners and provides more space around the patient—helping to reduce the feeling of being enclosed. We also take time to explain the procedure beforehand to ease any anxiety and answer questions. Patients are encouraged to use comfort measures such as listening to music through headphones, wearing a sleep mask, or practicing breathing techniques during the scan. In some cases, a mild sedative may be prescribed by their referring physician if needed. Our team is trained to be patient, supportive, and attentive throughout the process to help make the experience as calm and stress-free as possible.
